Eyes of Time, Brooklyn Museum
Chitra Ganesh: Eyes of Time is a multimedia, site-specific installation that draws upon the Brooklyn Museum’s encyclopedic collection to explore ideas of femininity, empowerment, and multiplicity. Taking the figure of Kali as a point of departure, the work considers the representation of femininity as a complex and layered cultural construct. Ganesh’s large-scale figuration is animated by sculptural elements such as cast resin arms and brass clock gears. The monumental wall drawing and objects paired with it suggest resonance between female icons of the past, and contemporary understanding of gender and identity as fluid formations that change over time. The surreal juxtapositions here rework shared cultural fantasies to allow for new reading of the past and alternate visions of the future.
